WORKING AT NORCAL LOGISTICS
DELIVERY DRIVE OPTIONS
ALTERNATIVE VEHICLE PROGRAM
Our alternative vehicle program, or AVP for short, is a way for us to meet our operating goals and it allows delivery drivers to use their own vehicle to deliver small to medium size packages.
If you have experience with DoorDash, Instacart, Uber Eats or any other delivery platform, you might be a good fit as an AVP driver. We are looking for safe, reliable, and experienced drivers to use their own vehicle on a part time basis to play a necessary role in our day-to-day operations. It is a great way to make extra money on a flexible schedule. AVP delivery drivers are employees of NorCal Logistics and are paid an hourly rate in addition to mileage. Here are a few things to consider before becoming a AVP driver:
- Car must be not older than 8 years
- Car must have a clean title and be free of major dings and dents
- Driver must be listed on insurance and registration
- Must be able to pass a background check and random drug tests if necessary
- Must be 21 years old or older

STEPVANS
A stepvan and is the most used delivery vehicle by NorCal Logistics. They range in size from 14’ to 22’. The P1000, or 18 foot stepvan is the most common in the industry. Stepvans are the perfect delivery vehicle and provide ample space and shelving to accommodate packages of all sizes. Although a class C license is sufficient, operating a stepvan requires a DOT Medical Certification due to the weight of the vehicle.
CARGO VANS
Cargo vans are more agile and allow drivers to navigate tight spaces with ease, but do not provide as much cargo room as stepvans. Most van drivers load packages themselves and have a smaller load than stepvans.
FAQ’s
What experience do I need to have?
Some of our best drivers have come to us with little to no experience. We do prefer a minimum of 1 year driving a like-sized commercial vehicle. One year of a valid Driver’s License and no accidents is a must.
What is a DOT medical examination and why do I need it?
The Department of Transportation (DOT) requires that commercial motor vehicle drivers obtain a physical exam every 2 years or sooner if needed. The DOT medical exam ensures that the driver meets the criteria of the physical, mental and emotional demands that it takes to operate a delivery vehicle safely. The physical tests vision, hearing, and blood pressure. In short, the DOT medical ensures the driver is physically capable of operating the vehicle.
What does a typical workday look like? How many hours will I work?
As with most delivery companies, we operate 7 days a week. Drivers usually work 4-5 days a week and average 7 to 8 hours per day. Peak season hours will vary (increase.) ** Add a Peak Season FAQ. Unlike a traditional work environment, our drivers deliver until done not a specific clock out time. Drivers start work at 8:00 am with pre-trip inspections and organize their vehicle before dispatch. Once a driver completes the assigned route the manager will indicate whether the driver returns to the station or helps a fellow route.
What size packages will I be delivering?
We deliver packages of all shapes and sizes from an envelope up to 150lbs. Usually, about 10% of our packages are 60lbs or greater. Most of our routes deliver between 100-150 stops each day.
Do I have to pass a drug test to work as a delivery driver?
In short, yes! We work in a Federally regulated industry, and a pre-employment drug test and random drug tests are required throughout the year. A positive drug test at any time automatically disqualifies a driver from employment.
Do I have to pass a background check to work as a delivery driver?
Yes, a criminal background check and a Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) are required before employment. Background checks go back 10 years.
Will I start driving right away?
Even if you are an experienced delivery driver, we will make sure you learn the way we do things first. It is very common for a new team member to have two weeks of training before he/she is on their own.
What characteristics do you look for in a potential team member?
Experience is important, but not a deal breaker. We can teach the right person the proper skills to become proficient, but we also look for someone to have a teachable spirit, a good attitude, and be a team player. We look for people who can work independently and have strong time management.
What is Peak Season? What can I expect During this Season?
Peak season is our busiest time of year. In October we increase staff to service our customers throughout November and December. We are Santa’s helpers, and we ensure every package is delivered to our customers by Christmas Eve. Drivers can expect their workday hours to increase to 8 or 9 hours per day. Some drivers also work six days per week. We utilize a volunteer system for drivers who work more than 5 days per week.
TRAINING
We provide first class training to prepare our drivers for real world experiences. On average, our drivers spend two weeks with a trainer to gain the confidence needed to excel in their position. Training includes classroom instruction, a cone test, and behind the wheel coaching. Our professional trainers create a safe place for questions, feedback, and mistakes to be made before a driver is on their own. Safety is our number one concern, and we make sure every driver feels comfortable before they dispatch on their own.
DRIVER OVERVIEW
Our full-time drivers are scheduled for an eight-hour workday, but typically spend 7 hours on the road daily. In addition to delivering, drivers are responsible for pre-trip inspections of their vehicle, maintaining safety, and proper customer.
Each day is a little different for delivery drivers, but most drivers average between 120 to 150 stops per day. Packages range from envelops to 150lb boxes.
A good driver is one who is organized, thinks ahead, and is quick on their feet. Our drivers have a minimum stops-per-hour requirement, so keeping a brisk pace is necessary. If a driver finishes his or her route early, it is common to help other drivers on the road.
PEAK SEASON
A Peak season is when there is increased shipping demands usually due to a holiday or event (Back-to School). The most common Peak Season is from late November to early January every year. This is the busiest time of year due to the holidays. It is common to work mandatory overtime and for some drivers, 6 days a week. This is a fast-paced time and requires drivers to stay well rested and alert.
